NFL Pro Day Fastest 40 Yard Dash Times

As athletes continue to workout at their individual pro days, NFL draft stocks are rising and falling faster than Wall Street itself. Monday we saw Sam Bradford deliver a near perfect pro day workout. Yesterday we saw the exact opposite as Dez Bryant delivered what has to be one considered one of the worst pro days in history. Today the spotlight moves from Lufkin to Austin Texas and the Texas Longhorns prospects take center stage.

Colt McCoy is the Longhorn everyone wants to see. We've seen him run the 40 already this off season when he worked out at the combine. In Indianapolis he ran a 4.79 second 40 yard dash that's more than enough to prove McCoy's athleticism. We all knew he could run, what we are curious about is how strong is his arm? If Colt McCoy can show he has an NFL caliber arm he has the chance to raise his draft stock to a high second round status.

However, one Longhorn who is turning heads is safety Earl Thomas. The 20 year old safety is already thought to be one of the best available in the draft, but this year's NFL Draft is deep with talent at the safety position. Walker Sports had Earl Thomas slated to go late in the first round, possibly to the Dallas Cowboys. However, after his workout today, things may change. Early reports are Earl Thomas ran a 4.37 40 yard dash. That could be good enough to move him inside the top 20 in the first round.

Other notable times from the Texas Longhorns pro day is All American receiver Jordan Shipley. Shipley ran a 4.55 second 40 yard dash which is slightly faster than his 4.65 40 he ran at the NFL Combine in March.

Yesterday at this time we were celebrating the efforts of Sam Bradford and his successful Pro Day Workout. Some said Bradford had the best workout since Troy Aikmen, he went 13-13 with his passes during warm ups, and only missed one of the 50 passes he threw during the workout, thus proving his shoulder is completely healed. He also proved he had great footwork which most of the scouts were pretty sure of to begin with.

However, today there was a different story being told in Lufkin Texas where former Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant took the field for one of the most anticipated pro days of the season. Bryant was declared ineligable to play for the majority of the 2009 season thanks to his dealings with Dion Sanders and his agent. When the 2010 NFL Combine came around, Dez Bryant chose not to participate in any drills citing a tweaked hamstring. Along with Bryant's lack of participation came allegations that Bryant had trouble attending meetings, and he was routinely late along with some other personal issues. None of this is good for a guy who has not played a down of football since early September.

However, despite all of these shortcomings, scouts still had faith in the talented receiver. The thought was if Dez Bryant could come out and perform well at his pro day it would put all the critiques to rest. For Dez Bryant, performing well meant, running crisp routes, showing he has good hands, and most importantly running a fast 40 yard dash time.

Early word out of Texas today is Dez Bryant failed to do that with his pro day performance. According to scouts Bryant ran a 4.57 second 40 yard dash. This is simply unacceptable. It is possible that a performance of this nature has dropped Dez Bryant out of the top 15 of the draft, and perhaps out of the first round.

Xavier Women Blow Layups and Miss the Final Four

The Xavier Men's basketball team are not the only talented bunch of basketball players residing in Norwood Ohio. The Xavier Women's team has quietly put together a successful season in their own right. While the men nearly stole the show with their double overtime thriller last Thursday against Kansas State in the Sweet 16, the XU women were looking to make some history of their own on Monday night.

The Lady Musketeers were the 3 seed entering the NCAA Tournament, and they earned their way to the Elite 8 where they took on the No. 1 seed Stanford Cardinals. This game would go down as nothing short of epic. Both teams battled back and forth for the chance to represent their institutions in the Final 4.

In the end, the game would come down to Xavier senior Dee Dee Jernigan missed not one, but two wide-open uncontested layups in the final 16 seconds of a tie game against top-seeded Stanford, either one of which would have put the Musketeers in position to advance to their first Final Four. Instead of Xavier's triumph Standford's Jeanette Pohlen took the ball coast to coast and put the Musketeer's dream to rest.

Fantasy Baseball Help!

Sorry folks this has nothing to do with anyone here at Walker Sports giving out advice and help for fantasy baseball. Sure we love to throw out our two cents when it comes to fantasy football, but baseball is another animal. As some of you longtime readers may know, we don't really do baseball here at Walker Sports. Sure we cover a few stories here and there, but on the whole it's not our thing. All of that is about to change this year. This year we are playing fantasy baseball, and that means we are in it to win it.

So the league we are in, drafted earlier today, and in typical Walker Sports fashion we skipped half the draft. When we did arrive into the draft room we quickly realized we were out matched and had no clue what was going on. So we made some picks, most of which were pretty bad. Nonetheless this is our team, and we are looking to you our readers to help us out.

NCAA March Madness Viewed by Walker's Rants

NFL Mock Draft: Considering the Pro Days

With the 2010 NFL Draft just under a month away, and plenty of aspiring NFL athletes working out at their respective schools for their pro days, I felt it was an appropriate time to look back at our previous mock drafts, and compile a new draft board. Thanks to the workout performances of Tim Tebow and the the pending performance by Sam Bradford this board is once again likely to change.


1) St Louis Rams: Sam Bradford QB: Bradford's Pro-Day will tell the tail of the tape on this one. There are still questions about his shoulder, and his ability to make the switch into a traditional scheme.

2) Detroit Lions: Ndamukung Suh DT: The big man is too good to pass on. On some of the big draft boards, McCoy is starting to jump Suh, but not here. There's simply too much upside to be had.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy DT:McCoy is the key to rebuilding the once great Tampa Bay defense. He has the size to fight against the run, and the speed to get up field and rush the passer.

4) Washington Redskins: Russel Okung OL: After reading and talking with some sources close to the Redskins, there is no doubt that head coach Mike Shanahan wants to bring in a quarterback he can groom to be his own. However, unless Bradford falls, there's not a quarterback worthy of blowing the fourth pick on. Look for the Skins to make a move in the second round.

5) Kansas City Chiefs- Eric Berry S: The Chiefs can go in a lot of directions with this pick. An offensive tackle would be a great pickup. However, the safety out of Tennessee is too good pass on. GM Scott Pioli believes in taking the best available talent and there is no doubt that is Eric Bery.

6) Seattle Seahawks- Bryan Bulaga OL: Much like the Redskins, the Seahawks would like to take a quarterback with this pick, but unless they were completely blown away by Tim Tebows workout last week, that's simply not going to happen. Bryan Bulaga is a reliable and strong offensive linemen that will finally plug the holes when Seattle lost everyone a few years ago.

7) Cleveland Browns- Joe Haden CB: Suddenly the AFC North is the new home for high flying passing attacks upgrades to Cincinnati, and Baltimore means teams are going to look to put the ball in the air. The Browns needs to upgrade their secondary. Joe Haden ran slowly at the combine, but his game speed is perfect.

8) Oakland Raiders- Bruce Campbell OL: The offensive lineman is a workout freak, and he's exactly the type of guy that Al Davis loves. This could be the big bust pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

9) Buffalo Bills- Jimmy Clausen QB: The Bills need a quarterback and Chan Gailey has shown a liking for the Notre Dame product. I'm not sure so Bills fans are so crazy about Clausen however.

10) Jacksonville Jaguars- Derrick Morgan DE: Yes the Jags signed Aaron Kampman during free agency but they still need an upgrade in on their defensive line.

11) Denver Broncos- Rolando McLain LB: As the free agency drags on, it looks highly unlikely that Brandon Marshall is on the move, combine that with more disturbing stories about Dez Bryant and you can bet that the Broncos don't want another diva receiver on the roster. Bringing in Rolando McLain gives them an instant upgrade and a rock to play the inside linebacker position.

12) Miami Dolphins- Sergio Garcia LB: Sure Dan Williams makes sense for this pick, but look who is making the pick. Bill Parcells has drafted DeMarcus Ware, Lawrence Taylor, and Carl Backs. He likes aggressive outside linebackers who can rush the passer.

13) San Francisco 49'ers- Trent Williams OL: It's difficult to tell what San Francisco will do here, especially after they parted ways with their GM. They desperately need a quarterback, but I don't think they will take one here.

14) Seattle Seahawks-C.J. Spiller RB: He is the exact type of back that head coach Pete Carroll likes to have. Spiller is versatile and can be used in a variety of ways.

15) New York Giants- Sean Weatherspoon LB: The more I see this guy, the more I like him. He has flown up my draft charts, and he can make an instant impact to rebuild the Giants linebacking core.

16) Tennessee Titians- Jason Pierre-Paul DE: Originally I pegged Dan Williams for this pick however with Kyle Vanden Bosch gone due to free agency, the Titens need to find a new pass rusher on the edge.

17) San Francisco 49'ers- Taylor Mays S: Mays opened a lot of eyes with is performance at the combine. We all knew he was big and physical but what impressed people the most was his lateral movement and his ability to make plays on the ball while it was in the air.

18) Pittsburgh Steelers- Kyle Wilson CB: I love the way this kid plays on tape. He is a bit undersized but he knows how to play the game, and he knows how to read the quarterback. He will be an instant upgrade for the Steelers shaky secondary.

19) Atlanta Falcons- Everson Griffen DE: The Falcon need an upgrade on their defensive line. They struggled to mount a consistent pass rush all season, Griffen will give them some teeth on the line.

20) Houston Texans- Dan Williams DT: The Texans would love to get a defensive back with this pick, but if Williams somehow slips this far, there is no way they pass on the big man.

21) Cincinnati Bengals-Golden Tate WR: Sure they brought in Antonio Bryant but they can afford Tate at this pick. The Bengals need another receiver who can compliment Chad Ochocinco.

22) New England Patriots-Brandon Graham LB: A smart speedy outside linebacker who can play in a 3-4 or a 4-3. Brandon Graham is the exact type of player the Patriots love to have on defense. There is a chance that Jared Odrick could sneak into this spot.

23) Green Bay Packers- Maurkice Pouncey G/C: He has first day talent and he can start almost right away. The Packers OLine played better as the year progressed but they still need a lot of help.

24) Philadelphia Eagles-Mike Iupati G/C: Talk about finding an anchor. Iupati doesn't blow you away with numbers, but he is a lock. Iupati has the tools to be a long time performer in this league.

25) Baltimore Ravens-Jermain Gresham TE: Sure he hasn't played football in a year, but with the injuries racking up on Todd Heap, it's time for the Ravens to move forward. Plus adding Gresham continues the trend of upgrading their passing game.

26) Arizona Cardinals- Jerry Hughes LB: This guy just gets things done. He racked up sacks like nobodies business while down in Fort Worth. Consider him an instant upgrade and added explosion to the Cardinals pass rush.

27) Dallas Cowboys-Earl Thomas DB: Granted the last time the Cowboys brought in a kid from Texas to play in the secondary it didn't work out well. However Earl Thomas is better than Roy Williams. The Cowboys could use a versatile safety.

28) San Diego Chargers- Ryan Mathews DB: Another corner who is talented and knows how to read quarterbacks. He can cover space and knows how to jump routs.

29) New York Jets- Dez Bryant WR: You know Rex Ryan wants to go defense, but Dez Bryant is too good a talent to pass up this late in the round.

30) Minnesota Vikings- Brian Price DT: With big Dan Williams getting up there in age, it is time the Vikes begin to look for his replacement. Price is a big body and a disruptive force in the middle. His presence could actually prolong that of Dan Williams.

31) Indianapolis Colts-Devin McCourty CB: The Colts were hoping to find Jeff Saturday's replacement in this spot, but the teams ahead of them have taken a big liking to Maurkice Pounty. In Devin McCourty they get a corner who's draft stock is quickly rising, and he fills a need in the secondary.

32) New Orleans Saints- Terrence Cody DT: Sure he is massive to the point that his weight may actually be an issue. But he can be a great anchor on any NFL roster.

NFL Changes Overtime Rules

With the NFL owners in session all week, we have one major change in the rules coming in, for playoff games at least.

Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game becomes tied again after that next series, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules.

Team owners voted 28-4 on Tuesday in favor of the proposal at the NFL meetings. Minnesota, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Baltimore were against the change.

"Modified sudden death is an opportunity to make a pretty good rule ... even better,'' said Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee. "Statistically, it needed to change. It wasn't producing the 'fairest result.'''

While it's nice to see the NFL is making some effort to change their rules, I do wish they had taken it a step farther. Making changes for the playoffs are great, but the same rules that are in place for the playoffs should be in place during the regular season. Good effort NFL owners but you fell just a step short.

Ex Star Jeremy Tyler Quits His Team

It was not that long ago when we wrote about Jeremy Tyler a high school basketball player out of California who was forgoing his senior year of high school to play basketball in Israel. Sure Brandon Jennings skipped college to go play pro ball in Europe and evade the NBA's rules on high school athletes, but Tyler was the first player to skip high school. While things are always clearer in retrospect it appears that Jeremy Tyler made the wrong move.

According to a press release yesterday, the 18 year old has left Jerusalem and returned home to San Diego California.

"Due to personal matters, Jeremy chose to leave the team on his own will on March 18 and return home to San Diego," Maccabi Haifa owner Jeffrey Rosen said in a statement. "We wish Jeremy all the best."

Tyler was only able to get on the court for 10 games for Haifa and he made little use of that time. The 6'11 power forward averaged 2.1 points, and 1.2 rebounds in just over 7 minutes of playing time a game. It is estimated that Tyler earned about $140,000 this season despite being unable to crack Haifa's starting lineup.

"I'm as surprised as you are. We had no idea he was coming home," Makhtar Ndiaye of the Wasserman Media Group told ESPN's Willie Weinbaum. "I'm speechless at this point and look forward to speaking with Jeremy. A contract, a learning process -- things weren't great -- but it was part of growing up. I'm disappointed and frustrated."

It was reported earlier last year that Tyler was struggling to make the transition to the pro game. His coaches and teammates routinely criticized his work and practice efforts. Last month he walked out during halftime of a game in protest of the lack of playing time he was receiving. His final three games with Haifa were spent at the end of the bench wearing street clothes as he was not selected to the roster.

Ndiaye said he spoke to Tyler earlier this week and "everything was cool."

"The kid decided on his own," Ndiaye said. "We did everything humanly possible to make it a success story for him and his family."

Sonny Vaccaro an adviser to Jeremy Tyler and his family insist the Israel experiment was not a negative one. He claims he spoke with NBA scouts who say any potential draft stock Tyler may have has not been affected.

Vaccaro went on to compare Tyler to Brandon Jennings who spent a year in Europe where he played in relative obscurity and maintained a low profile. Stating that Jennings was quiet while in Europe and now he is staring in the NBA.

Due to his age Jeremy Tyler is still ineligible to play in the NBA. Sources close to him say Tyler will sign another professional contract over the summer and gain some more experience under his belt.

Despite what scouts may have told family adviser Sonny Vaccaro one has to think, Tyler's actions are raising red flags to NBA teams. It's not that he has proven to be ineffective while playing, but his attitude and the way he has handled the entire situation. To walk out on a team and seemingly tell no one will leave a bad taste in many scouts mouth.

March Madness Live Blog Day 2

Hello everybody, after an insane first day of the NCAA Tournament, we are back and living blogging the action from day two. Let's not waste any time and get right to the action at hand.

5:00 With the second set of games wrapping up it appears as though everything has gone as planned. Wisconsin received a scare from Wofford but won by four in the end.

Mizzu took care of Clemson to hand the ACC their first lost in this year's tournament.

Pitt is up 15 with five to go in the second half and appears to be onto safe sailing in this one.

3:46 This Oakland Pitt game is a snoozefest. Now I remember why I hate watching Pitt play

3:41 Mizzu is tied with Clemson at the half at 39. This looks like it has the makings to have a special ending.

3:30 We have blood on Derick Nelson of Oakland. He was hit above the eye with an elbow.

3:16 With 4 minutes gone in the game, and the score still 3-3 its pretty obvious Pitt is imposing their style of play on this game

3:10 Pitt and Oakland have tipped off. If Pitt wins this game, it sets up an interesting rematch with Xavier. With that game being in Milwaukee one has to think there will be a strong XU fan base in attendance.

2:55 Sienna just ripped off an 8-0 run to take the lead over Purdue, this may be the end for the Boilermakers

2:43 With one Final Four team already out of the mix, and 10/17 first round picks correct. I no longer care about my brackets. There I said it.

2:18 WVU easily handles Morgan. Minnesota is still sticking around becoming pesky for Xavier. They trail the Muskies by 7 with 1:30 to go

1:45 Second halves are underway around the country. WVU is on a 40-20 run basically and crushing Morgan State. Xavier on the other hand still has their hands full with Minnesota but they are up 3 points.

1:28 One side note, the Purdue Sienna game is about to tip off in an hour. Purdue is missing their best player, and there are plenty of questions about them.

1:25 Many thought that Cornell would give Temple a difficult time, right now that is proving to be true. Looking like you can chalk that one up as another bad call in the Walker Sports brackets.

1:17: Despite going into the half down by 3, the Gophers have done a great job holding Xavier in check. Xavier averages 80 points a game, currently they have 25 at the half. Great defense being played by Minnesota.

1:15 At the half, WVU is handling Morgan State without much of a problem. WVU got off to a slow start but found their stride without a problem.

1:07: Despite being up by a point, Minnesota is doing a great job of clogging up the Xavier offense. They cant seem to find a rhythm at all

1:02: Xavier and Minnesota are tied at 17 a piece in the early going, Cornell is out to an early lead on Temple. this was a game many said to watch because Cornell could pull the dreaded 12 over a 5 upset.

March Madness Live Blog: Day 1

Hi college hoops fans. After shaking a bit of a nasty hangover thanks to St. Patrick's Day, we are up and running, and by that we mean watching basketball all day. Honestly, we do it all just for you. It's a difficult job but someone has to do it.

3:24 PM EST: The second set of games are well underway and here are your scores: Sam Houston and Baylor are tied at 20 with 6 minutes to go. Murry State is up 4 over Vandy

3:15 PM EST: Robert Morris is unable to convert and they will fall to Nova 73-70.

3:12 PM EST: Robert Morris is not going quietly and they are gonna give Nova hell. Reynolds now at the line to shoot 2. Nova is up by 1.

3:11 PM EST: Robert Morris down 3 goes the length of the court and there's some great defense by Nova. Forced the block, but Nova failed to convert on the break at the line shooting 2. Misses the front end.

3:07 PM EST: Nova is holding on to a 1 point lead with 35 seconds to go. They are befitting from some good calls.

2:59 PM EST: Nova continues to open their lead in overtime. It looks like finally the #2 seed Nova is emerging

2:54 PM EST: It looks like BYU has this one locked up and will advance over Florida.

Nova has opened up the extra period with a four point lead over Bob Morris.

2:51 PM EST: Nova goes for the lob ball but it's not good.

2:50 PM EST: Nova is unable to get a good look, ball is knocked out by Robert Morris Nova will get 1 more chance with just over a second to play.

BYU has opened up a 7 point lead over Florid in the second OT with 1:20 left in the game.

2:47 PM EST: 25 seconds to go, and Nova finally tied the game with Robert Morris. Nova just called T.O. I'm sure Nova will play for the final possession, look for Scottie Reynolds to make a play.

2:44 Pm EST: Oh yeah did I mention Nova is still down by 1 to Robert Morris? Yeah this is truly an insane day.

2:42 PM EST: The Second OT is underway, and BYU is off to a quick start opening up a 3 point lead, and going to the line to shoot 2.

2:39 PM EST: Really? A toss up volleyball style shot at the buzzer. I can't imagine that's the shot Donavan drew up during the TO

2:37 PM EST: Florida forces a turnover and calls timeout with 19 seconds to go in the game. It's all tied up once again. This one is going down to the wire again.

2:25 PM EST: BYU attempts to go the length of the court in .5 seconds. As you can guess, that didn't work, it's off to OT now.

Nova is still down 3 points to Robert Morris with just over 6 minutes to go.

2:22 PM EST: Florida is unable to get the bucket as time is ticking away. BYU tries to call timeout with 1 second let.

2:20 PM EST: Notre Dame misses a good look from the corner get the put back but too little too late. Notre Dame goes down as the first upset of the 2010 NCAA tournament.

2:18 PM EST: ODU knocks down both free throws and goes up 3 with 8 seconds to go.

BYU is down a point with 40 seconds to go, so much for the whole pulling away thing.

2:17 PM ESt: ODU is up by 1 with 10 seconds to go. Carter is heading to the line to shoot 2. ODU has been horrible from the line today.

2:14 PM EST: Big triple for Florida and they are up 3 with 3 minutes to go.

2:12 PM EST: 29 seconds left in the game ODU is on the line and up by 3 points. Darius James is shooting 2. He missed the front end of a 1 n 1

2:10 PM EST: If Notre Dame loses this game there is no doubt the lost will be pinned on Luke Harongody going 0-7 from the field.

2:07 PM EST: The Gators are scrapping and closed the gap to 3 with just under 5 to go. They are not going to go away quietly.

2:02 PM EST: Nova still trails Bob Morris by 3 points. I'm still not too worried about this game. Nova can overcome a 3 point scare.

Both teams in the ODU vs. ND game have gone cold as there has not been a bucket in just over a minute of game time.

2:00 ODU gets a 3 point play the old fashion way and they are tied with 5 and change left. BYU is trying to put some distance between themselves and the Gators. I still cannot believe Florida made it into the tournament.

1:50 PM EST: Second half underway for Nova. They cut the lead down to 4 points. One can't help to remember what Nova looked like last year when they started the tournament down by 14 to American University.

1:46 PM EST: There's another Hansbrough brother and he plays for Notre Dame. He's a guard and right now he is killing ODU. Big 3 pointer up the Irish up by 4.

1:39 PM EST: ODU has closed the gap to 1 with 13 mins to go in the 2nd. For what it's worth, I picked ODU to knock off Notre Dame.

1:34 PM EST: You got to wonder if Nova coach made the right choice in benching two starters for a "minor teaching measure." Sure Reynolds and company only sat for 4 minutes, but Nova has yet to find their stride yet.

1:19 PM EST: Currently watching Notre Dame up by 5 on Old Dominion 17:50 left in the 2nd. BYU is up 2 on Florida with 18 to go in the 2nd, and and the shocker is good old Bob Morris up by 6 at the start of the 2nd half
