Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Diagnosed With Cancer

Sad news today from the NBA front. Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has told the AP, that he has a rare form of cancer. The all-time leading scorer was diagnosed last December with chronic myeloid leukemia, he told The Associated Press on Monday.

According to Jabbar, his doctors have given him a good outlook and said, he should not have to alter his current lifestyle to accommodate his condition.

Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication for the disease. He is a paid spokesman for the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, which makes a drug that treats the illness.

Citing the way Los Angeles Lakers teammate Magic Johnson brought awareness to HIV, Abdul-Jabbar said he wants to do the same for his form of blood cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated.

There is little doubt that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the all time great basketball players at any level. Combine his time in the NBA with the Lakers, and his tenure at UCLA and you have a legend. Our hopes and prayers are with the bigman as he battles this disease.
